EQ (Equalizer)

A tool that boosts or cuts specific frequency ranges in a signal — the most used and most abused knob on any DJ mixer.

An equalizer is a filter that adjusts the amplitude of specific frequency bands independently, leaving the rest of the signal untouched. The 3-band EQ found on most DJ mixers gives you control over low (bass), mid, and high (treble) frequencies — three knobs that together shape the entire tonal character of a track in the mix.

How DJs use EQ

  1. EQ mixing. The classic technique: cut the bass on the incoming track and the outgoing track simultaneously to prevent bass clash during a transition (two kick drums fighting in the same low-frequency space sounds like a muddy mess). Once the incoming track is sitting in the mix, swap the bass — cut the outgoing, restore the incoming. Clean, surgical, effective.
  2. Room correction. Every system and every room emphasizes or swallows certain frequencies. A system that's heavy in the low-mids makes every track sound boxy. A quick mid cut compensates without touching the source tracks. You're not fixing the music — you're fixing the room.
  3. Energy management. Lifting the highs adds air and presence. Pulling the mids creates a more scooped, electronic feel. Pushing the low end at a key moment adds weight. EQ is a real-time mixing tool, not just a one-time setup.

The kill switch

Many DJ mixers have an EQ that sweeps all the way to -infinity on the low end — meaning it completely removes that frequency band from the signal rather than merely reducing it by -20 or -30dB. This is a performance tool. Killing the bass mid-track and then slamming it back in is a moment. Killing the highs creates a muffled, subterranean feeling that builds tension. This is not a tone control; it's a performance instrument.

Cut first, boost rarely

If you're boosting EQ to fix a problem — adding highs because the track sounds dull, adding lows because it sounds thin — you're often fighting a signal chain issue or a mastering decision that can't actually be fixed at the mixer. Cut what's in the way before you boost what you want. And remember: boosting EQ increases the signal level, which eats into your headroom and can push you toward clipping. Every dB of boost is a dB less of safety margin.

The best EQ move is often the one nobody notices — a subtle cut that makes the mix feel cleaner without anyone being able to point to what changed. If people can hear your EQ moves, you're probably overcooking it.
