Noise Floor

The quiet hiss and hum that's always there in any audio system, even when nothing's playing. Every signal has to rise above it to actually be heard.

Nothing electronic is perfectly silent. Resistors generate a little thermal noise just from being warm. Power supplies leak a little hum. Cables pick up a little stray interference. Add it all up and every audio system has a baseline level of hiss sitting underneath everything else, present whether you're playing a track or not. That baseline is the noise floor, and it's not a flaw you can engineer away completely (it's closer to a law of physics you manage around).

Why it matters for DJs

The noise floor sets the bottom edge of how quiet your system can get before everything is just hiss. Gain staging exists largely to keep your signal as far above that floor as possible at every stage, since any time you have to boost a weak signal later in the chain, you're boosting the noise floor right along with it. A track that was recorded quiet and then cranked at the mixer doesn't just get louder, it gets louder and hissier, because you've dragged the noise floor up with it.

The distance between your loudest signal and the noise floor is called dynamic range (or, from the other direction, signal-to-noise ratio). Bigger gap, cleaner-sounding system. This is the actual number gear specs are bragging about when they list a high signal-to-noise ratio.
