When you load a track into rekordbox, Serato, or Traktor, the software analyzes the waveform and places a marker at each beat — specifically by detecting the transients of the kick drum and other rhythmic elements. These markers form the beat grid: a consistent series of timestamps at the track's BPM that tells the software exactly where beat 1, beat 2, beat 3, and beat 4 are throughout the entire track.
Why accuracy matters
The beat grid is the reference that everything else snaps to. Get it wrong and the consequences compound:
- Beat sync will lock to the wrong position and the tracks will phase in and out rather than locking together
- Hot cues placed on the downbeat will actually land somewhere off the beat
- Loop points will start or end at the wrong moment, producing glitchy, unintended sounds when the loop engages
- The waveform display will show misaligned beats, making visual beatmatching unreliable
Why grids go wrong
The analyzer works well on electronically produced music with a consistent, machine-quantized click track. It struggles when that assumption breaks down:
- Live recordings — human drummers (and even programmed parts mixed live) breathe slightly, speeding up and slowing down in ways that don't fit a fixed BPM
- Tracks mastered without a click track — some older recordings, particularly from the analog era, have tempo drift baked in throughout
- Complex or unusual intros — tracks that open with a percussion break, an a cappella, or a sound effect can confuse the analyzer before the main rhythm establishes itself
- Half-time or double-time sections — a track that shifts feel (a breakdown that drops to half-tempo) may cause the analyzer to miscalculate the BPM
How to fix a bad beat grid
Every major DJ platform includes tools for manual grid correction. The process is roughly the same across software:
- Play the track and listen for where the downbeat (beat 1) actually falls versus where the software placed it
- Set the downbeat marker manually — usually by tapping a button on the beat or dragging the marker to the correct position
- Verify the BPM is correct; if the grid drifts over the length of the track, the BPM may need fine adjustment
- For tracks with genuine tempo fluctuation (live recordings), use "warp" or "dynamic grid" markers that allow the grid to flex at specific points rather than staying rigid at a fixed BPM
This is prep work. Time spent correcting beat grids before a gig is time that saves you from train wrecks during one. A track with a perfect grid takes three seconds to fix in library mode. Discovering a bad grid mid-mix while a floor full of people is watching is a very different situation.
Beat grids vs. BPM detection
The BPM displayed in your library is derived from the beat grid analysis — it's the average tempo calculated across the grid markers. A wrong BPM and a wrong beat grid are usually the same problem; fixing the grid often fixes the displayed BPM automatically. But not always: some tracks display a correct BPM while the grid is offset by half a beat (the markers are between the beats rather than on them), which is a phase error rather than a tempo error. Listen carefully — your ears catch this faster than your eyes will.
