BPM is the speedometer of music. 120 BPM means 120 beat pulses per minute, or exactly 2 per second. It's the single most important number in DJ software, printed on every track in your library, and the foundation of beatmatching — the core skill of aligning two tracks so they play in time together.
What BPM means
A beat is the basic rhythmic pulse of a track — the thing you tap your foot to. BPM counts how many of those pulses happen in one minute. The math is simple: 120 BPM = 2 beats per second. 140 BPM = 2.33 beats per second. At 170 BPM (drum & bass territory) you're getting nearly 3 beats every second, which is why it feels relentless.
Typical BPM ranges by genre
- Hip-hop — ~85–100 BPM
- House — ~120–130 BPM
- Techno — ~130–145 BPM
- Trance — ~138–145 BPM
- Drum & bass — ~160–180 BPM
These aren't rules — they're averages. And genres blur constantly. A "slow techno" track at 128 BPM and a "fast house" track at 128 BPM have the same BPM but might feel completely different based on the groove, the kick pattern, and the arrangement.
BPM and energy
Higher BPM generally feels more urgent and intense. This is partly psychoacoustic — faster tempos literally give your brain less time between beats, which raises arousal — and partly entrainment, the tendency of the body to synchronize its rhythms (heartbeat, movement, breathing) to external rhythmic stimuli. A 145 BPM techno track doesn't just sound faster; it physically pulls you into a different physiological state than a 120 BPM house track.
BPM is a tool for reading and building energy on a dancefloor. Knowing a track's BPM is not the same as knowing how it will feel in a room — but it's the starting point for every energy decision you make as a DJ.
Reading a BPM number vs. beatmatching by ear
DJ software displays BPM for every track, and beat sync can align two tracks automatically. That's a useful tool — but it's not beatmatching. Beatmatching by ear means listening to two tracks simultaneously through headphones, feeling where the beats diverge, and adjusting pitch (and therefore tempo) until they lock. That skill exists independently of what any number on a screen says, and it's the difference between knowing what BPM means and being able to feel it.
Master tempo (key lock) lets you adjust BPM without changing the pitch of a track — which means you can nudge a 128 BPM track to 130 without it sounding like a chipmunk. Useful, but it has limits: stretch too far and the audio artifacts become audible.
