On a turntable with no pitch correction, speeding up a record always raises its pitch — push the tempo fader up and the track gets faster and higher, like a tape sped up. Master tempo (sometimes called "key lock" or "pitch lock") breaks that link. It lets you change playback speed on its own, while a separate process re-synthesizes the audio to keep the original pitch intact.
Why it matters for DJs
Master tempo is what makes large tempo jumps usable in a set. Beatmatching a 122 BPM house track into a 140 BPM track without it means the slower track gets pitched up so far it sounds like a different key entirely — vocals turn chipmunked, basslines lose their weight. With master tempo engaged, you can push that same tempo range and the track stays in its original key, so the harmonic relationship between songs stays predictable instead of accidental.
Master tempo isn't free — it works by digitally stretching or compressing the audio in time, which is more processing than a simple speed change. Pushed to extremes (very large tempo shifts), you'll start to hear artifacts: a slightly grainy or "smeared" quality, especially on vocals and cymbals. Small-to-moderate tempo changes are usually transparent; big ones aren't free of cost.
Where you'll find the control
- CDJs and standalone players — almost always a dedicated "Master Tempo" or "Key Lock" button near the pitch fader.
- DJ software (Serato, rekordbox, Engine DJ) — typically a toggle per deck, sometimes with a separate "keylock quality" setting that trades CPU load for audio fidelity.
- Turntables — generally don't have it natively; true vinyl pitch changes always shift key, which is part of why all-vinyl tempo-matching across wide BPM ranges is harder.
