Every digital DJ setup needs a computer somewhere. Something has to read the file off a drive, decode the compressed audio back into samples, stretch it to the tempo you asked for, run the EQ and effects, and push the result out to the speakers. That is a real computing job, and it does not care what shape the box around it is.
An all-in-one puts that computer inside the gear. There is a processor, memory, and an operating system under the jog wheels, and it boots up when you flip the power switch. Plug in a USB stick, hit load, and the machine does the whole job by itself. A controller, by contrast, is the same set of knobs and platters with the engine left out — it needs your laptop to do the actual thinking.
The unplug test. Pull every cable except power and the speakers. If music still plays, it's an all-in-one. If the screens go dark and the platters become expensive paperweights, it's a controller.
What's actually in the box
- Two or four decks with jog wheels, pitch faders, cue and loop controls.
- A real mixer — channel faders, EQ, filter, crossfader, and a master and booth output, all in analog hardware downstream of the decks.
- Screens showing waveforms, BPM, key, and your library.
- Storage inputs — USB ports, an SD card slot, sometimes an internal drive bay for an SSD.
- An embedded computer doing the decoding, time-stretching, and effects. You never see it, which is rather the point.

- Denon DJ Prime 4+ and SC LIVE 4 — four-channel standalone units, with the SC LIVE series adding built-in speakers.
- Numark Mixstream Pro+ — an entry-level standalone, proof that "no laptop" is no longer a premium feature.
A pair of CDJs next to a club mixer is also laptop-free, but it isn't an all-in-one — it's several standalone machines wired together. The all-in-one's defining move is collapsing that rig into a single chassis with a single power cable.
Why it matters in the booth
The practical difference is failure modes. A laptop is a general-purpose machine running a hundred things you didn't ask for: a background updater, a Wi-Fi scan, a notification that steals focus mid-mix. Each one competes for the same processor that owes you an uninterrupted audio buffer, and when it loses that race you hear it as a click, a dropout, or silence. An all-in-one runs a stripped-down embedded system whose entire job is playing your track, so there is very little left to go wrong.
You pay for that in flexibility. The software is whatever the manufacturer shipped, effects and features arrive on the manufacturer's schedule, and your library has to be exported to the drive in a format the unit understands (usually rekordbox or Engine DJ) before you leave the house. A forgotten export is the standalone equivalent of a dead laptop battery.
Some units blur the line on purpose. The XDJ-XZ and the Denon Prime 4+ play standalone from a USB stick, and will also act as a plain controller for rekordbox or Serato when you plug a laptop in. Buying one of those is buying both answers.
