Every piece of audio gear has a ground reference (a point it treats as "zero," the baseline every other voltage gets measured against). In theory, every ground in a system should sit at exactly the same potential. In practice, two outlets on different circuits, a long cable run, or a building's questionable electrical history can leave two grounds a few volts apart. Connect those two devices with a cable, and you've built an accidental wire between two unequal grounds. Current flows to even things out, that current finds its way into your audio path, and you get the hum (usually around 60 Hz, or 50 Hz if you're somewhere that runs on European mains).
Why it matters for DJs
Ground loops love to show up at the worst possible time: a venue with old or inconsistent wiring, a backline you didn't set up yourself, or a rig that's plugged into outlets on two different circuits across the room. The hum is usually quiet enough to ignore on a soundcheck through small monitors, then becomes very obvious the second it hits a full PA at volume. It's not your gear failing (it's just basic electricity doing exactly what electricity does when you give it a path of least resistance).
Quick triage: if the hum disappears the moment you unplug one specific cable (without unplugging the gear itself), that connection is part of the loop. Work backward from there one connection at a time rather than guessing.
How to actually fix it
- Plug everything into the same circuit (or the same power strip). If every device shares one ground reference, there's nothing to disagree about.
- Use a ground lift on a single connection. Breaks the loop by disconnecting one ground path, usually a switch on a DI box or a 3-prong-to-2-prong adapter. Use sparingly and never on the safety ground of your own gear (see the callout below).
- Use a balanced (XLR or TRS) connection instead of unbalanced (RCA). Balanced cables carry the signal as a difference between two wires, which cancels out a lot of the noise a ground loop introduces along the way.
- Use an isolation transformer or a DI box with ground isolation. Purpose-built for exactly this problem when you can't control the venue's electrical setup.
Never cut the safety ground pin off a power plug to "fix" a hum. That pin exists to give fault current somewhere safe to go instead of through you. Lift signal grounds, not safety grounds.

Ground loops come up in Module 2: Signal Flow as part of troubleshooting a rig you didn't build yourself. Half of fixing a noisy booth on the fly is knowing the difference between "this is a settings problem" and "this is a wiring problem," and a ground loop is definitely the second one.
