An XLR connector has three pins: one for ground, and two more (hot and cold) that carry the same audio signal twice, with one copy flipped in polarity. That setup is what makes XLR a balanced connection, capable of rejecting noise picked up along a long cable run. It also has a locking latch, so it physically cannot fall out of a jack the way a quarter-inch plug can when someone trips over a cable mid-set.
Why it matters for DJs
XLR is the connector you'll find on booth outputs, the line that feeds the main PA, and most pro-grade powered speakers. It's the connection you want for any long run (across a stage, into a booth amp rack, wherever the cable has to travel through a space full of lighting rigs and power cables) because the balanced design keeps hum and interference from riding along with your signal.
Quick way to remember the gender convention: "male" XLR plugs (with visible pins) carry signal out of a device, "female" XLR jacks (with sockets) carry signal in. A booth output is male, a speaker input is female, and a cable has one of each.
Where you'll find it in a DJ rig
- Booth and master outputs on club mixers, feeding the PA and amp rack.
- Powered speakers and amplifiers, almost always balanced for noise immunity at gig volume.
- Microphones, for hosts, MCs, or live vocal elements layered into a set.
