Balanced vs. Unbalanced

Two ways of wiring an audio cable: balanced sends the signal twice (once flipped upside down) so noise can be cancelled out later, unbalanced sends it once and hopes for the best.

An unbalanced cable (think: a standard RCA cable) carries one wire for signal and one for ground. Simple, cheap, and fine for short runs. The problem is that any electrical noise the cable picks up along the way (from power cables, lighting rigs, fluorescent ballasts, whatever's nearby) gets added directly to your signal, with nothing to stop it.

A balanced cable (XLR, or TRS with three conductors) carries the signal twice: once normal, once flipped in polarity (positive and negative swapped). At the receiving end, a circuit flips that second copy back and adds it to the first. Here's the clever part: any noise picked up along the cable gets added equally to both copies in the same polarity, so when you flip and recombine them, the noise cancels itself out while the original signal doubles in strength. The cable is basically tattling on its own interference, then correcting for it.

This trick (called common-mode rejection) is why balanced cables can run 50, 100, even 300 feet without picking up audible hum, while an unbalanced cable starts getting noisy after a few feet near the wrong gear.

Why it matters for DJs

Most consumer gear (turntables, some controllers, home stereo equipment) uses unbalanced RCA connections, while club mixers, booth outputs, and most XLR-equipped speakers run balanced. Knowing which is which matters most when you're running a long cable to the booth amp or across a stage: balanced for any long run, unbalanced only for short, low-risk connections (gear sitting right next to each other).
