Audio signals exist across a huge range of voltages. A microphone produces a tiny, fragile signal. A power amplifier's output can drive a speaker with enough force to move serious air. Line level sits in the middle — a defined sweet spot that most professional and consumer audio gear uses as a common language.
The three signal levels DJs encounter
- Mic level — very weak, typically in the millivolt range. This is the raw output of a microphone before amplification. Plugging a mic directly into a line input gives you a whisper, even at full volume.
- Line level — the standard operating level for most gear. Media players, mixers, audio interfaces, and effects units all speak line level. There are two common standards: –10 dBV (consumer) and +4 dBu (professional). They're close enough that most gear handles both, but the difference matters in studio contexts.
- Speaker level — the amplified output from a power amp to the speaker cabinet. This is far stronger than line level. Connecting a speaker-level output to a line-level input (say, running speaker wire into a mixer channel) can seriously damage the input — and possibly the gear downstream.
The practical rule: match levels at every connection. Line out to line in. Never speaker out to line in. If something sounds weak and thin, check whether the source is outputting at the level the destination expects.
Why DJ mixers have a separate mic input
Most DJ mixers have a dedicated microphone input that's separate from the channel line inputs. This is not a courtesy — it's a technical necessity. Mic-level signals need a preamp to boost them up to line level before the mixer's signal path can work with them properly. The mic input has that preamp built in. Plugging a microphone into a line input would produce a barely audible signal, cranked gain, and a lot of noise. Plugging a line source (like a media player) into the mic input would massively overdrive it.
Line level and gain staging
Gain staging is fundamentally about keeping signals at the right level through every stage of the chain. Line level is the target at most stages in a DJ rig — what's coming out of the player, what's entering the mixer, what's leaving the mixer before it hits the amp. Understanding that line level is a defined range (not just "medium volume") helps you think about mismatches rather than just turning knobs until something sounds right.
A phono cartridge (from a turntable) outputs at an even lower level than a microphone, and requires RIAA equalization on top of amplification. That's what a phono preamp (or a mixer's phono input) does — it's not just a level boost, it's a level boost plus a specific EQ curve baked into the vinyl format.
